Power Brace review by George Alford
Most users of the new digital camera from Canon will appreciate a better weight distribution and comfort thanks to the Power Brace from Dolgin Engineering. While making the handling of the XL-1 camera as comfortable, as any classic shoulder mounted camera, Power Brace allows the user to use popular inexpensive Panasonic 2.0 AH "stick" batteries (AG-455/456) as a proven reliable power source. Power Brace accepts any available external 12V-15V DC power.
Power Brace is an integrated shoulder brace, a battery holder and a voltage regulator. It is attached to the camera using the rear socket (normally used by the shoulder support or by MA-100 microphone adapter). The Power Brace also provides an alternative method for mounting an MA-100 Microphone Adapter. The easy to see LED voltage indicators keep the camera person informed of battery status.

Why do all our products include the battery status LEDs?
As with many other cameras, the XL-1 remaining battery charge indicator is automatically disabled when an external power source is connected. While using even high capacity external batteries, the camera person can only guess how much running time is left. Our smart voltage monitor circuit helps you not to be caught off guard while shooting a critical event. 11V, 11.5V and 12V LEDs give you a precise indication of the battery charge left.

- Lowers camera center of gravity
- Fully padded
- Accepts MA-100 Microphone Adapter (not shown)
- Allows for normal tripod use (front tripod socket is not used by the brace)
- Accepts standard (AG-456) inexpensive Panasonic 12 V 2.0 batteries
- Includes a 4-pin XLR input to accomodate any external 12-15V DC power source
- Maintains a 90 minute run time in record mode
- Battery status LEDs
Why Panasonic "stick" batteries?
These rugged batteries have been around for a long time and still remain popular, thanks to several good reasons:
- No "Memory effect" related problems
- Recharged in less than 2 hours
- Lowest cost
